A 63-year-old man in pajamas slashed a roommate during a drunken fight about a woman Sunday night in their North Charleston mobile home, according to an incident report.

The suspect, Eddie Lee Driggers, told the police that he was just trying to protect the wife of his alleged victim, but he was arrested on a charge of second-degree assault and battery. He remained jailed Monday in lieu of $5,000 bail.

A man, 49, living at the Hawthorne Drive home later told officers from the North Charleston Police Department that he had been arguing with his wife earlier. He left.

When the man returned, Driggers was drinking, according to the report, and Driggers confronted the man about the way he had treated his wife.

It started as an argument, but when the man turned his back, Driggers cut his shoulder with a Gerber folding knife, the document state. The alleged victim, whose wife said she saw the cutting, ran outside and hid under the home until the police arrived about 10:25 p.m.

Shirtless and clad in pajama pants, Driggers kept repeating to the officers that he was only protecting the man’s wife, according to the report, but he was too drunk to answer more questions.
