A 33-year-old man is accused of punching his ex-girlfriend in the face and setting fire to her West Ashley home on Saturday.

Charleston County sheriff’s deputies responded to 1102 Hillside Drive at 4:43 p.m. to investigate reports of fire. They discovered that the blaze was preceded by a domestic dispute, Maj. Jim Brady said.

North Charleston resident Vantrez Grant reportedly struck his former girlfriend, 25-year-old Katie Shumpert, in the face several times, Brady said. When she left the home, he sent her several threatening text messages and then texted her that he was burning her home, he said.

To prove his point, Grant sent her a photo of the residence on fire, Brady said.

St. Andrews and James Island fire departments responded to the blaze, which caused substantial damage to Shumpert’s home, Brady said.

Deputies arrested Grant at the scene and charged him with third-degree arson and criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature, Brady said.

He is scheduled to have a bail hearing this evening.
