A North Carolina man is jailed without bail after allegedly taking a Wild Dunes woman hostage at gunpoint Wednesday morning.

Robert Howell, 39, is charged with attempted murder, kidnapping, first-degree burglary, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and possession of cocaine.

Isle of Palms police received multiple 911 calls beginning about 8 a.m., according to Capt. Kimberly Usry. She said Howell broke into a former girlfriend’s home on Dunecrest Lane and took her hostage at gunpoint. He allegedly took her to Hudson’s Market on Palm Boulevard and while there she indicated to employees that she was in trouble.

Usry said she was able to briefly call 911 with the help of a market employee and when officers arrived, they found Howell holding the victim with a gun on the lawn outside at the Grand Pavilion.

They were able to quickly take him into custody and the victim was not injured, Usry said. She added that Howell was denied bail at a later hearing.
