COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina Highway Patrol graduated 42 troopers from its Basic Class 96.
The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reports Basic 96’s graduation Thursday brings the total number of troopers in the state to 768.
The troopers, who began training in January, graduated from the Criminal Justice Academy on May 8 and continued on for specialized training from the Patrol in all areas of law enforcement, including DUI detection, traffic laws, collision investigation and the use of firearms.
The graduates will complete another 400 hours of field training upon graduation.
The Highway Patrol received 1,777 applications and 910 applicants were referred for processing for Basic 96.
South Carolina Department of Public Safety Director Leroy Smith says the troopers from the class will head to communities all over the state.
