New location for proposed James Island cellphone tower being considered

James Island resident Kate Pratt and some of her neighbors are upset about plans for a 180-foot-tall cellphone tower off Fort Johnson Road near Eaglewood Retreat. A meeting on the project scheduled for Thursday at Town Hall has been postponed, officials said Tuesday, as a new location for the tower is explored.

A meeting scheduled for Thursday at James Island Town Hall to address neighborhood concerns about a planned cellphone tower has been postponed.

Also delayed is a Town Council public hearing on rezoning needed for the project that was originally scheduled for Feb. 19, officials said Tuesday.

The meeting and the public hearing have not been rescheduled.

The Town of James Island announced the changes on Tuesday along with the news that the proposed site for the tower is being reviewed.

“The applicant is considering a change in the application to move the location of the cell tower on the property,” Berry Rudisill of Town Building Services said in an email.

The meeting on Thursday was for residents to learn more about the project from an attorney for American Tower Corp.

The company applied to the town for approval of a zoning change needed to locate a 180-foot-tall cell tower on property leased from the James Island Youth Soccer Club on Fort Johnson Road. Residents of nearby Eaglewood Retreat said they worried about the tower being a neighborhood eyesore that would reduce property values.
