New county health rankings released by the University of Wisconsin on Wednesday show Charleston County still ranks as one of the healthiest in South Carolina.
Charleston remained steady from 2012, ranking seventh out of the state’s 46 counties. Dorchester placed sixth overall and Berkeley county moved into the top 10, up from 12th in 2012 to ninth in 2013.
This year, Marion County ranked at the very bottom, replacing Allendale County as the unhealthiest county in South Carolina. Beaufort County claimed the top spot again.
The University of Wisconsin’s Population Health Institute releases the annual rankings for every county in the country. The rankings are based on several factors, including the premature death rate, sexually transmitted diseases and adult obesity, among others.
The Post and Courier used the Institute’s 2012 data for the 2013 “Forgotten South Carolina” series.
