North Charleston is looking for professional graphic artists interested in competing for a $5,000 civic mural project.

The selected artist will design a huge, 140-foot wide, 40-foot tall mural to be placed on a white industrial oil tank near the foot of East Montague Avenue. A typical highway billboard is 48 feet long.

The oil tank will serve as the site for the work, which will be fabricated on cast vinyl.

“The ideal design would create excitement and interest for the community, honor the history of the community, compliment the redevelopment initiatives of the community, and be appropriate to the location,” said an announcement Monday from the North Charleston Cultural Arts Department.

The tank is owned by Odfjell Terminals Charleston, which operates a bulk liquid marine terminal in North Charleston for distribution of chemical, vegetable oil and petroleum products. One requirement of the mural design is that it must include Odfjell’s logo.

Professional graphic artists living in Charleston, Dorchester and Berkeley counties will be considered for the city-funded commission.

Interested artists should contact the North Charleston Cultural Arts Department at 843-740-5854 or for the complete commission prospectus. Application materials must be hand delivered by 5 p.m. on June 28, or postmarked by June 30.
