COLUMBIA, S.C. - A deputy director will be the acting director of the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice.

The State newspaper reported that Sylvia Murray has been chosen to replace retired director Margaret Barber.

Murray has been the Juvenile Justice Department's deputy director of administrative services. Gov. Nikki Haley's office said a search is underway for a permanent successor for Barber.

The Juvenile Justice Department has more than 1,400 employees to oversee about 140 prisoners and another 8,500 juveniles in other disciplinary programs.
