Mount Pleasant resident to lead Coast Guard Auxiliary district

Robert Weskerna of Mount Pleasant has been elected commodore of the Coast Guard Auxiliary District 7.

MOUNT PLEASANT — Robert Weskerna has been elected commodore for the Coast Guard Auxiliary’s seventh district.

The auxiliary is the volunteer, uniformed, non-military component of the U. S. Coast Guard, focusing on boating and maritime safety, port and waterway security. The district includes 100 flotillas, or groups of boats in South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

Weskerna, of Mount Pleasant, has served as district chief of staff since 2013. He is the second commodore from South Carolina in the auxiliary’s 76 years of operation. He will oversee a 130-person staff and lead 5,500 auxiliary members, for a two-year term.

Weskerna is trained and certified in surface operations as boat coxswain, marine safety, vessel examiner, instructor and numerous other positions. He offers his personal watercraft in support of safety patrols, regattas, search and rescue and training missions in South Carolina.
