Mount Pleasant police respond to stabbing in Park West

Mount Pleasant Police are investigating a stabbing in the Park West neighborhood of Mount Pleasant.

Police responded to the 1600 block of Baltusrol Lane at about 7 p.m. Sunday, according to Chip Googe, public information officer. A suspect was taken into custody, Googe said.

Lucas Cavanaugh, 17, of Sullivan’s Island was pronounced dead at the scene from a stab wound, Charleston County Chief Deputy Coroner Bobbi Jo O’Neal said Monday.

Investigators have a suspect in custody, he said.

Carole Aikman, who lives in the neighborhood and was a witness at the scene after the stabbing, said that it resulted in a death and that there was a coroner on scene.

She and a group of juveniles were shocked that the crime happened in Park West.

“The most issues we ever have here is cars speeding,” Aikman said. “It’s just not a place where there’s ruckus and crime.”

A 13- and 14-year-old who lives nearby where the crime happened said they knew the people involved and couldn’t believe there was a stabbing. The 13-year-old said two high-school aged boys got into a fight, but he was trying to find out why.

“We’ve been trying to get in there and find out,” he said. “I’ve tried texting (my friends) but they’ve all said they can’t talk to me because the cops were in their house.”
