Motorcyclist airlifted to hospital after crash in Awendaw

A motorcyclist was airlifted to a hospital Sunday after crashing into a guardrail in Awendaw, according to police.

The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash just after 4:30 p.m. in the 2400 block of Guerins Bridge Road, which is in the Francis Marion National Forest.

Sheriff’s office spokesman Maj. Eric Watson said initial reports indicated the motorcyclist lost control and ran off the road and wrecked into a guardrail.

Dispatch officials said both directions of nearby Highway 17 were shut down while emergency officials responded to the crash.
