Midlands man gets life sentence in starvation death of daughter with Down syndrome

LEXINGTON, S.C. — A Lexington County father has been sentenced to life in prison for the starvation of his toddler daughter.

The State reports that Filiberto Garcia-Campos was sentenced Friday. He was convicted of homicide by child abuse in the death of 13-month-old Madison Garcia, who was born with Down syndrome.

Authorities say Madison weighed only 9 pounds and 2 ounces when she died in 2013. That’s less than half the average weight of 21 pounds expected for a toddler girl.

Case records show the girl died from chronic malnutrition and dehydration. Her ribs and backbone stuck out, she had pressure sores and no fat on her bones.

Madison’s mother, Tracy Roach, pleaded guilty in April to homicide by child abuse and is serving a life sentence.
