Memorial Day weekend events

Memorial Day weekend will see a number of special events, many of which will honor veterans. Here are a few of them:

What: The medical center will host a Memorial Day ceremony in the flag garden, with guest speaker Capt. Marvin Jones, commanding officer with Naval Health Clinic Charleston.

What: Freshfields' Memorial Day Weekend Concert Series will feature two nights of live music on the Village Green: rock, oldies and Top 40 from Hot Sauce on Friday and Carolina beach music from CoastRunnier on Saturday. Blankets and chairs are encouraged.

What: Magnolia Plantation and Gardens will offer free garden admission to active duty military personnel and their immediate family on Memorial Day. This gift to those who serve America applies to the general garden admission. It does not include the separate tours of the house, swamp garden, nature boat, nature train and “Slavery to Freedom” program. Valid active duty identification required.

What: The American Legion Post 21 invites the public to attend Summerville's annual Memorial Day Ceremony for a celebration of America's heroes with guest speakers Col. John Lamontagne, Commander, 437th AW at Joint Base Charleston, and Sen. Sean Bennett. Local and state dignitaries, including Sen. Tim Scott, will be in attendance. A reception and fellowship will immediately follow at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3433, 10154 Bellwright Road, Ladson.

What: Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum will host a Memorial Day ceremony to honor the men and women who died serving in the United States military, to include a performance by the Eyrie Overtones of Northside Baptist Church and a special film tribute and wreath casting with a benediction from a chaplain with Joint Base Charleston.

What: The Charleston Men's Chorus will present its annual Memorial Day Concert in tribute to fallen military heroes, veterans and current armed forces members. The concert is part of the Piccolo Spoleto Festival and will include service anthems, patriotic songs and more.

What: As part of Piccolo Spoleto, the Charleston Community Band and the Columbia Community Concert Band will present this annual concert program with rousing marches and Broadway show tunes, concluding with a patriotic musical tribute to each of the United Stated Armed Forces.
