McCormick chief: Unpaid leave not fair during sheriff run

MCCORMICK, S.C. — A candidate running for McCormick County sheriff says it isn’t fair he has been asked to leave his police job while other candidates can continue to work in law enforcement while running for the open seat.

McCormick Police Chief J.R. Jones told The Index-Journal of Greenwood that the town’s mayor put him in unpaid leave two weeks ago, saying the race could be a conflict of interest.

Jones says the other three candidates running have been able to keep their current jobs in law enforcement.

Incumbent Sheriff George Reid is not running for re-election.

Jones says he should be held to the same requirements as other candidates — to be able to work as long as he only campaigns when off duty.
