Man sought in assault, hostage-taking in Mount Pleasant

Natale John Caligiuri Jr.

Mount Pleasant police have issued an arrest warrant for a North Charleston man they say beat his former girlfriend and then held her hostage with a screwdriver all night.

The incident took place Monday night on Kings Gate Lane in Dunes West, according to the police report.

Natale John Caligiuri Jr., 47, of Singley Street in North Charleston, is charged with kidnapping and criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature.

The woman told police that Caligiuri was her ex-boyfriend and arrived at her house about 11 p.m. to pick up some belongings. She said he started verbally abusing her, then kicked her with a steel-toe boot on the left side of her body and back. She told officers he then dragged her up a flight of stairs by the hair to her bedroom, shut the door, took her house keys and cellphone, then held a metal screwdriver to her throat all night long. She said he finally released her about 8 a.m. and walked downstairs.

EMS noted bruises on her left shoulder, left arm and back, and officers noted boot marks on her T-shirt that matched the area of the bruises, according to the report.

Caligiuri was charged with criminal domestic violence in Mount Pleasant twice in 2013, according to jail records, although online court records don’t say if he was ever convicted.

Caligiuri was also arrested in December and charged with receiving stolen goods. The woman told police that he had just been released from jail, according to the report.
