The man who was fatally shot outside a Charleston public housing complex Saturday had a lengthy criminal record and was not supposed to be on the property.
George Akeem Bennett, 28, of English St. in North Charleston was killed around 11:40 a.m. in the parking area at East Bay and Reid streets, according to Charleston police.
The complex is called Wraggborough Extension. The Charleston Housing Authority has Bennett’s name on a list of people banned from all public housing property.
Bennett’s criminal record includes convictions for strong-arm robbery in 2007 and possession of cocaine in 2008 and 2010, according to Charleston County court records. His last conviction earned him a five-year prison sentence.
Bennett and a 27-year-old man who lives on Aiken Street were sitting wounded in a car when police arrived, according to the incident report released Monday. The wounded man was holding a 3-year-old child when he was shot, police spokesman Charles Francis said. The child was not hurt. The man was treated at a hospital and released.
The man who was in the car with Bennett is also on the list of people banned from Charleston public housing.
Police have not said who might have been the target of the shooting, and no charges have been announced.
