Man sentenced to 17 years for shooting Rock Hill veteran

YORK, S.C. — A man has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for shooting and wounding a disabled Vietnam veteran in Rock Hill.

Local media outlets report that 32-year-old Wolfgang William Liewald was sentenced Thursday after pleading guilty to attempted murder and burglary.

Liewald was one of three people arrested in August. Authorities said he acknowledged that he and two others shot Whiteside to get revenge over alleged sexual molestation of someone else a decade ago. Liewald’s attorney says his client’s violence was drug-induced.

Whiteside survived the shooting but needed multiple surgeries. Court records show he was arrested in 2005 on a charge of a lewd act against a child. He pleaded no contest to aggravated assault and battery and was sentenced to five years’ probation.
