MONCKS CORNER -- A diver recovered the body of a 24-year-old man who died while swimming in the Tailrace Canal Sunday night.

William Troy Lee, Jr., of Cayce, died after he jumped from a bridge support beneath the U.S. Highway 52 bridge and into the canal, Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury said.

Salisbury said someone called 911 at 8:45 p.m. Witnesses said the man surfaced once but not a second time,.

Crews with the Berkeley County Rescue Squad, the S.C. Department of Natural Resources, Santee Cooper Law Enforcement and the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office searched the waterway.

Shortly before 10:30 p.m., a diver located the man, not too far from where he had entered the water, Salisbury said. DNR agents are investigating the swimming accident, Salisbury said.

The death has been ruled accidental.
