Man leads Goose Creek police on chase, hits patrol car before wrecking, police say

James Cale Gilliam

A man driving recklessly in a Goose Creek subdivision Sunday afternoon fired a shot at a man who followed him and then led police on a chase before hitting a patrol car and wrecking, according to police.

James Cale Gilliam, 26, of Irby Drive in Summerville was charged with fifth-offense driving under suspension, failure to stop for a blue light, and pointing and presenting a firearm.

Officers were called to the Boulder Bluff subdivision shortly before 3 p.m. to check out a complaint of a reckless driver, according to the incident report. A man who had been following Gilliam’s white Infiniti told officers that Gilliam shot at his car.

Police said Gilliam fled when officers tried to stop him. He hit a patrol car on Hollywood Drive and crashed into another car at Liberty Hall and Lindy Creek roads, according to the report. Nobody was seriously hurt in the collisions.

After the second wreck, Gilliam jumped out of the car and ran toward the North Greenview subdivision, according to the report. A resident told police he gave Gilliam a ride to the Wendy’s on Redbank Road but called dispatch when he saw all the police cars in the area.

Officers arrested Gilliam at the Quality Inn pool on Redbank Road.

Gilliam was wanted by the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office on charges including burglary and domestic violence, according to the report.

Additional charges may be filed, Goose Creek Police Capt. John Grainger said.
