Man dies after being struck by train while asleep on tracks

ROCK HILL, S.C. — Investigators say a 48-year-old man has been struck and killed by a train while sleeping on railroads tracks in Rock Hill.

York County Coroner Sabrina Gast identified the victim as Stephen Adams in a news release and called his death around 4 a.m. Sunday an accident.

Authorities say Adams was covered up and lying on the tracks asleep when he was hit. Engineers saw him, but couldn’t stop the Norfolk Southern train in time.

Police say Adams had property that was taken from an earlier car break-in nearby and was wanted for armed robbery and kidnapping.

Authorities don’t know why Adams was on the track, but say sometimes the tracks stay warmer than the surrounding ground at night.
