Man charged with murder in death of Spartanburg woman

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — A man has been charged with murder in the death of a pregnant Spartanburg woman whose body was found beaten and burned in some woods.

Police tell local media outlets that 52-year-old Wilford Lee Jr. was charged Wednesday in the death of 28-year-old Christina Michelle Humphries.

Humphries’ body was found last month by a man walking along a path. Authorities say she died from being beaten, then burned using kerosene. Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger says Humphries was several months pregnant when she was killed.

Lee was already in jail on other charges, and it wasn’t immediately known if he had an attorney. About a month before Humphries’ death, authorities say she filed a police report accusing Lee of assaulting her and throwing her from a car.
