Man arrested in death of boy, 2

— The death of a 2-year-old boy is being blamed on the man who was supposed to be watching him while his mother headed off to school.

An investigation showed that the child died in a hospital March 19 of severe abdominal injuries as a result of blunt-force trauma, according to Mount Pleasant police Maj. Stan Gragg.

Bryan Okeith Seabrook, 25, of Mathis Ferry Road, was arrested Thursday and charged with homicide by child abuse.

Police did not disclose the names of the boy or his mother.

Here’s the background, according to the police report.

The boy’s mother left the apartment about 12:20 p.m. to catch the first of two buses to take her to Tanger Outlets for a 5 p.m. cosmetology class at the Paul Mitchell School. Seabrook, who is her mother’s boyfriend, was to keep an eye on her son and two daughters.

The woman met a friend at Dunkin’ Donuts while waiting for class to start. She decided to skip the class and go to Buffalo Wild Wings instead to help her friend celebrate her birthday. They never made it to the restaurant.

The woman got a call that her son was at East Cooper Medical Center and she needed to get there quickly. She rushed to the hospital and found that her son had died. She collapsed to the floor in tears.

Seabrook told police that the boy threw up at the table and appeared weak in the bathtub, then appeared even worse after he put in him bed, so he brought him to the hospital along with his two sisters.

No further details of why Seabrook was charged in the death were available Thursday. He is scheduled for a bond hearing today.

Seabrook has no prior criminal record in Charleston County, according to court records.
