Man arrested after prowler complaint wanted in earlier crimes

Sheldon Lanard Mitchell

A North Charleston man who was arrested after a woman reported hearing a prowler near her apartment Thursday is a suspect in two other crimes.

Around 8:15 p.m., the Gullah Avenue resident reported that somebody was lurking around her apartment, according to a North Charleston police incident report. Officers found a man nearby and recognized him as Sheldon Lanard Mitchell, 49, who is a suspect in a convenience-store robbery last month. Warrants were out for his arrest on charges of armed robbery, kidnapping and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. He was captured on video during a holdup of the Kangaroo at 5154 N. Rhett Ave. around 11:20 a.m. Oct. 3, according to an incident report.

Charleston police also had an arrest warrant out for him on a strong-arm robbery charge.

Mitchell was booked into the Charleston County jail on those four charges. His address was not immediately available.
