The man accused of killing three women, including an Adams Run convenience store clerk, is back in jail, after a failed suicide attempt, according to authorities.

Clarendon County Sheriff Randy Garrett said that Jeffrey N. Eady, 30, of New Zion, tried to slit one of his wrists Monday while jailed at the detention center.

Eady used a plastic wrist band that is issued at the jail to keep track of inmates, Garrett said. He spent a few hours at the hospital and was released back into the custody of the jail, where he remains under suicide watch.

Eady was arrested on Saturday after a multi-state man hunt ended in Florida.

He’s accused of killing 77-year-old Sadie Brown and 65-year-old Maybell White, both of Clarendon County, and Adams Run resident Crystal Johnson, 37.

Brown and Eady are second-cousins and she was living with his father at their home on 527 Subdivision Road in New Zion, authorities said. Jeffrey Eady would drive her to doctor’s appointments, according to an incident report.

Garrett said Brown was the first of three women killed.

After his arrest, Eady agreed to show Clarendon County Sheriff’s investigators where her body was, Garrett said. He was placed in the back of a patrol car and he directed them to a stretch of forest near Firetower Road in New Zion, where she was found dead, he said.

An autopsy was completed on Monday. Garrett expects to release the results of how she was killed later today. Brown had been reported missing last week.

While authorities were looking for her, Eady allegedly shot and killed 65-year-old Maybell White on Thursday at a recycling center across the street from his home. Eady went inside the small office shed, killed White, rolled up her body in a rug, and stole her car, according to Garrett.

Later that day, he stopped at the D&V Convenience store south of Ravenel in Charleston County, where he robbed and killed the clerk, Crystal Johnson, 37, of Adams Run, authorities said.

Investigators tracked him to Mexico Beach, Fla., where he was arrested. He was then taken back to Clarendon County to face the charges.

The same gun was used to kill all three women, according to Garrett. U.S. Marshals recovered that weapon when they arrested him in Florida, he said.

Third Circuit Solicitor Ernest Finney said he expects to meet with investigators and 9th Circuit Solicitor, Scarlett Wilson, on Thursday to discuss how and where to prosecute Eady.
