Charleston city and county planning departments kick off a plan Tuesday to improve the Dupont and Wappoo area in West Ashley.

The first of a series of public workshops will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at St. Andrews Middle School at 721 Wappoo Road. The meeting will include a brief presentation by local leaders. Then, the public will have time to share ideas and concerns about the area, which runs roughly between Savannah Highway, Sam Rittenburg Boulevard and Wappoo Road.

The public planning workshops will focus on creating a neighborhood plan for the area. Planners, designers and consultants on the project team will ask community members for input on land use, multi-modal transportation improvements, drainage and design and development standards.

Open houses will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday in the school’s multipurpose room. The public is invited to drop in, share ideas and see the planning work in progress.

The wrap-up meeting will be held at 6 p.m. June 23 in the school’s auditorium. Results of the workshops will be presented there, along with planning recommendations and next steps.
