A small earthquake happened near Summerville early Friday.
The magnitude 1.7 temblor at 1:02 a.m. was recorded near U.S. Highway 78. The tremor was in the Azalea Estates subdivision, about 2 miles north-northwest of the town.
No one reported feeling the earthquake, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Small quakes aren’t unusual for an active fault zone, such as the Lowcountry. A catastrophic earthquake struck the Charleston region in 1886.
