When Marilyn Van Derbur claimed the Miss America crown in 1958, no one knew she’d survived 13 years of sexual abuse by her father.

On Wednesday, Van Derbur, an award-winning speaker and author of “Miss America by Day: Lessons Learned from Ultimate Betrayals and Unconditional Love,” will speak at Charleston’s Darkness to Light spring luncheon on Daniel Island about the abuse she suffered as a child and teenager.

The event will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Daniel Island Club.

Tickets to the luncheon are $40 and available to purchase online.

Darkness to Light is a Charleston-based nonprofit working to end child sexual abuse.
