Lightning damaged an apartment tonight in Summerville, forcing a family of four to move to other quarters, authorities said.

The bolt struck Timberlane Apartments, off of Old Trolley Road, and caused structural and electrical damage, a power outage, and a small, smouldering fire.

“It blew out the roof a little bit,” Old Fort Fire Department Assistant Chief Joe Waters said.

Waters said the building that was struck houses four apartments, but only one apartment was damaged.

American Red Cross volunteers came to the scene and arranged immediate aid and temporary housing for the affected family. The family included one child, the Red Cross said.
