WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. - Lexington County deputies say they have charged a father and mother with homicide by child abuse after their 13-motnh-old daughter died from malnutrition and dehydration.
Investigators say the child weighed just over 9 pounds when she died earlier this month after weighing more than 6 pounds when she was born.
Deputies say the child had Down syndrome, but had no medical condition that should have led to her gaining such little weight and being dehydrated.
Investigators say 42-year-old Tracy Roach and 33-year-old Filiberto Garcia remain in jail awaiting a bond hearing. It wasn’t known if they had lawyers.
Authorities say Roach and Garcia didn’t check on the child for nine hours before she was found unconscious in her crib on Sept. 2.
