Jury convicts man of attempted murder in shooting of wife

WILLIAMSTON, S.C. — An Anderson County jury has found a Williamston man guilty of attempted murder in the shooting of his wife in the head.

Local media outlets report Billy Ray Smith was also convicted Wednesday of obstruction of justice, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime and unlawful possession of a weapon.

Investigators say Smith had claimed that someone shot Sandra Smith through the door of their home in April 2014. The gun was later found at the home of Billy Smith’s son.

Authorities say Sandra Smith spent around six months in the hospital as the result of her injuries.

Billy Smith was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the attempted murder charge and five years on each of the other charges. The sentences will be served concurrently.
