A 38-year-old woman was hospitalized after being attacked by a pit bull in her Johns Island neighborhood about 1 a.m. Friday, according to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.

The woman, Danielle Green, and her boyfriend James Dean, told a sheriff’s deputy that they were walking down Traywick Avenue off Maybank Highway when a brownish bull dog started barking, jumped up and bit Green’s right forearm, according to Sheriff’s Office spokesman Maj. Jim Brady.

Dean told police he had to punch the dog several times to get it to let go of Green.

Brady said the dog’s owner came out of his residence and told authorities that people try to tease his dogs when they are walking down the street.

The responding deputy said he observed how the dog named Woody was able to break free of his chains and attack Green, who was taken to Roper St. Francis Hospital.

Authorities determined that the dog is up to date on its shots, so it is not being taken from its owner.

That means the dog is usually quarantined at home pending the outcome of the investigation, Brady said.
