James Island woman struck, killed on New Year's Day on Folly Road

A James Island woman has died after being hit by a truck on Folly Road in the early morning hours of New Year's Day.

The Charleston County Coroner's Office identified her as Alexis Richardson, 32. She died at Medical University Hospital from blunt force trauma.

A man was driving a GMC Sierra south on Folly just after 1 a.m. Thursday when he hit Richardson near Battery Island Drive, according to the Charleston Police Department report.

Although the incident is still under investigation, the driver was found not to be impaired, said police spokesman Charles Francis. The 49-year-old North Charleston resident, who works on Folly Road, told police that he did not see where the woman came from and initially was unsure what he had hit.

Because of the severity of the injuries, the police Major Accident Investigation Team responded, along with firefighters and EMS.
