Isle of Palms plans to increase its parking fines and the grace period for paying them.
For spaces with a time limit, the fine would rise from $15 to $25. For other parking violations, the penalty would double to $50. The grace period would increase from 20 days to 30.
City Council gave first vote approval to the changes on Tuesday. A second favorable vote is required for the new fines to go into effect.
Councilman Ryan Buckhannon said the time-limited spaces currently have a fine that is the same as the cost to park in a private lot so some visitors are not deterred by the penalty. The fine for other violations is part of the city’s move to resident-only parking areas, he said.
