Inmate, 63, dies after suffering chest pains at Charleston County jail

A 63-year-old inmate has died after suffering chest pains at Charleston County’s jail, a facility spokesman said Thursday.

The man had been arrested Monday by Charleston police on a warrant for having an open alcohol container in a vehicle, Charleston County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Eric Watson said.

As a standard procedure, Watson said, the State Law Enforcement Division has been asked to investigate the inmate’s death.

He was identified as James Brantley, a Florida resident, according to the Charleston County Coroner’s Office.

On Wednesday, Brantley was taken to the Cannon Detention Center’s medical facility after he started having the pains and breathing difficulty, Watson said. Paramedics transported him around 10 p.m. to Medical University Hospital, where he died.

Deputy Coroner Sheila Williams said that no foul play is suspected but that Brantley’s cause of death needs further investigation.
