3 injured after drug suspect hits 3 vehicles

Cleo Williams Jr., 24, DOB 07/03/1988 of 4870 Foxwood Drive, North Charleston, was arrested by NCPD on Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012 after a drug investigation led to a chase in which he is alleged to have struck several other vehicles.

Three people, including a pregnant woman, were hospitalized after a suspect in a drug investigation crashed during rush hour Thursday while trying to flee police on Rivers Avenue.

Cleo Williams Jr., 24, of North Charleston, will face state and federal charges today, according to the North Charleston Police Department.

At about 5:10 p.m., police tried to stop a vehicle traveling west on Rivers near Greenridge Road as part of a drug probe involving several jurisdictions.

When the officer turned on his lights and siren, the driver sped up, police said.

The police car then had a minor collision at Rivers and Greenridge and lost the suspect’s vehicle, which sped west in the eastbound lanes of Rivers, passing other police officers not involved in the initial stop.

Those officers also chased but lost the suspect, who subsequently collided with three vehicles on Rivers near Otranto Road. One of the vehicles rolled onto its side.

The occupants, a 27-year-old pregnant woman and her 9-year-old child, were taken to Trident Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. An occupant of one of the other vehicles also was taken to Trident.

Their conditions were not available.

The suspect ran from the scene and was caught after a short pursuit, police said.

A large amount of cash and a handgun were found in the vehicle.

During the S.C. Highway Patrol’s investigation, traffic was diverted onto U.S. Highway 78 for about two hours.
