Horry County may write off millions in unpaid EMS bills

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Horry County is considering writing off millions of dollars in unpaid emergency medical services bills from three years ago amounting to 32 percent of total EMS billings for the year.

The Sun News reports that those treated in 2011 have walked away from more than $5.1 million in bills. During the year, EMS billed patients $16.1 million.

County officials say they have tried to collect the outstanding debt and some council members say they want to know who is walking away from the debts.

It's not a new problem for the county.

Back in 2010, county EMS increased its billings to bring in more revenue. The increase at the time was prompted by people walking away from their bills.
