Homicide victim in Charleston County shooting identified as 28-year-old

The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a homicide after a man arrived at an area hospital Tuesday with gunshot wounds and later died.

The man has been identified as 28-year-old Demeatrius Raynard Smalls of Charleston, according to the Charleston County Coroner’s Office.

The Charleston Police Department responded just after 12:15 a.m. to Hazelwood Drive to investigate a report of gunshots heard in the area. The Sheriff’s Office responded to assist and later took over the investigation, according to a Tuesday media release.

According to witnesses, the victim was in a vehicle in front of a residence on Hazelwood Drive with another man and a woman. The two men exited the vehicle and walked to the back of the residence to meet with unknown individuals, at which time shots were fired, the release states.

The victim’s friends took him to St. Francis Hospital, where he died.

Smalls was charged in 2012 with murder in a shooting incident on San Miguel Road in which Kentrell Samuel, 27, was killed. Prosecutors dropped the charges in June 2014, according to online court records.

Anyone with information about the homicide is asked to call the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office at 202-1700 or Crime Stoppers at 554-1111. Tips can also be submitted through the sheriff’s office website.
