A child died Sunday in a two-vehicle crash after a driver ran a stop sign in Berkeley County, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Sgt. Bob Beres said the crash occurred at S.C. Highway 41 and Charity Church Road in Huger. A 2013 Chevy vehicle was headed east on Charity Church when the driver, 22-year-old Yabrel Talamantec, disregarded a stop sign and struck a 1998 Honda Accord. Both vehicles overturned, he said.

The 28-year-old driver of the Honda had two “small children” in the vehicle who were properly restrained, Beres said. He also was wearing a seatbelt. One of the children died and the other was taken with the driver to Medical University Hospital.

Talamantec was also taken to the hospital. None of their conditions are known and the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office has not yet released the deceased child’s identity.

The crash remains under investigation, Beres said.
