Hanahan police dog Shadow dies during training

Staff report

Hanahan police dog Shadow died Tuesday night during training, apparently from heart problems.

He began his service with the department in 2008 and became a valuable and reliable asset for the department, Lt. Michael Fowler said.

During his K-9 career, Shadow located numerous narcotics and made multiple non-bite K-9 apprehensions, Fowler said.

Shadow also obtained the most difficult of available certifications through the National Police Work Dog Association. He was certified in drug detection work, suspect tracking, searches and other areas.

His services were also used by surrounding agencies on multiple occasions.

A memorial was held Wednesday for Shadow, and McAlister-Smith Funeral Home in Goose Creek donated their services for cremation.
