Charleston City Council couldn’t agree Tuesday on closing the inside loop of the road around Hampton Park for bicyclists.

Instead, it approved allowing Charleston County to repave the road, plus add a number of crosswalk and other improvements.

In the meantime, City Council wants traffic officials to conduct more study on whether a closed bike lane and a designated pedestrian path on Mary Murray Boulevard can still work.

The decision came after more than 31/2 hours of debate and public hearings.

Advocates want the bike lane added as a recreation alternative.

But some council members had safety concerns about people mixing in with cyclists and cars nearby.

The lane closure was being sought to complement road, sidewalk and crosswalk improvements being done under the Charleston County/Roadwise half-cent sales tax program. About $100,000 has been allocated.
