BEAUFORT - A group of veterans is working to raise money to expand the Beaufort National Cemetery.

The cemetery is filling quickly and the group wants buy to 5 more acres of land for burials.

The Beaufort Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/1icFczl) that an earlier committee purchased 15 acres in 2003. That was expected to give the cemetery enough space through 2030, but half that land has already been used.

The new group hopes to buy five acres which is now the site of an aging apartment complex. The additional land is expected to provide enough cemetery space through 2050.

There are about 400 funerals a year at the cemetery but the number is expected to increase as veterans from the Korean and Vietnam wars die.
