GREENWOOD, S.C. — The mayor of Greenwood is accused of driving drunk after his wife’s birthday party.
The Index-Journal of Greenwood reports that Welborn Adams was arrested early Saturday and charged with driving under the influence after being stopped at a Highway Patrol checkpoint.
Adams says he doesn’t believe he was impaired. He says he was driving his wife home from her 40th birthday party that he hosted, and the checkpoint was just yards from his home.
The 49-year-old mayor says he’s awaiting the results of a blood test he took voluntarily.
He was released from the county jail on his own recognizance after signing a form promising to appear in court.
