Goose Creek teen Ian Bongalonta did not advance to the semifinal round of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which starts today.

The field of 278 was narrowed to the top 50 for the semifinal, which starts at 10 a.m. on ESPN-2.

During the preliminary rounds, Ian and 277 other youngsters took a computerized spelling test Tuesday and spelled one word on stage during Rounds 2 and 3 today. Ian spelled both of his words -- Jovicentric and hebdomad -- correctly.

The results from the preliminary rounds are added together to determine the semifinalists.

Ian, 14, a rising eighth-grader at Westview Middle School, won the Lowcountry Spellbound! competition on March 22 and is sponsored by The Post and Courier.

The finals will air at 8 p.m. on ESPN.
