Goose Creek bicyclist dies after being struck by an SUV in North Charleston

A 47-year-old Goose Creek man died Tuesday after the bicycle he was riding was struck from behind by a vehicle at U.S. Highway 52 and Rivers Avenue in North Charleston.

Virgil Smalls died at Medical University Hospital from injuries sustained in the crash just before 12:30 a.m., according to Charleston County Chief Deputy Coroner Bobbi Jo O’Neal.

North Charleston police officers arrived at the crash just after midnight Monday, according to spokesman Spencer Pryor. He said the preliminary investigation indicates that Smalls was riding in a westbound lane when a Jeep Grand Cherokee struck him from behind.

The driver of the Jeep, who was not identified, was not injured and has not been charged. Pryor said the investigation is ongoing.

He did not know if the bicyclist was wearing a helmet or had reflective gear on his bicycle. The incident report, he added, was not available.
