Georgetown County deputy kills woman armed with knife, sheriff's office says

A Georgetown County deputy who was called to deal with a woman threatening to hurt herself with a knife ended up fatally shooting her when she attacked him, according to the sheriff's office.

Deputies were sent to Ashcraft Circle in the Litchfield Beach community about 6:30 p.m. Saturday after a family member of the 37-year-old woman said she was locked in a bathroom with a knife. Deputies got a property manager to open the door of the residence. The deputies said the woman charged them with a knife, and one of them fatally shot her.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division was called in to investigate. The deputy was placed on administrative leave.
