Furman University chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon suspended

GREENVILLE, S.C. — The national organization of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity has suspended its Furman University chapter because of hazing.

The Greenville News reported Wednesday that the fraternity’s supreme council made the decision to suspend all members of the local fraternity from all activities until the fall of 2017.

National fraternity spokesman Brandon Weghorst told the newspaper that many members of the Furman chapter had violated the fraternity’s health and safety standards, including allegations of forced alcohol consumption during bid-night activities.

Weghorst said the local chapter had been put on probation by the university after previous violations and given multiple chances to resolve their infractions, but failed to do so.

He said the national office felt a period of closure was necessary to stop the pattern of behavior.
