Funeral arrangements have been finalized for Cynthia Graham Hurd, a career librarian and community leader who died last week after a gunman killed nine people inside Emanuel AME Church.
Her wake will be 8:30 to 10 p.m. Friday at Emanuel AME, 110 Calhoun St. Her sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Inc., will hold a ceremony during that first half-hour.
Hurd’s funeral will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The county’s library branches will close Saturday to allow employees to attend her service.
Hurd was a librarian with the county for 31 years, and the family has established a fund with the library system to continue her work. Donations in her honor will go toward educational programming at the John L. Dart Branch Library and the St. Andrews Regional Library, both branches that Hurd managed.
They may be sent to the Charleston County Public Library, c/o Cynthia Graham Hurd Memorial Fund, 68 Calhoun St., Charleston, SC 29401. Donors soon may donate via the library’s website, ccpl.org.
