Alison Bechdel, cartoonist and author of the graphic memoir “Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic,” will speak at 7 p.m. Thursday at the College of Charleston’s TD Arena. The event is free and open to the public.

“Fun Home,” published in 2006, is a coming of age story centered on Bechdel’s complex relationship with her father, a high school English teacher and director of the town funeral home. In college, Bechdel came out as a lesbian and learned her father was gay.

The book was the College Reads! book selection for the 2013-2014 school year. It was given to all incoming freshmen and has been used in various classroom activities.

Bechdel also is known for the long-running comic strip “Dykes to Watch Out For.”
