Traffic was tied up near Rivers and Durant avenues in North Charleston today after a freight train derailed. A CSX Transportation train with 64 cars was entering the CSX Intermodal Yard off Meeting Street about 5 a.m. today when it derailed and six cars came off the tracks, said Rob Doolittle, a CSX spokesman. Several of the cars were turned on their sides.
No one was injured and there were no hazardous materials involved, Doolittle said.
The cars that derailed were hopper cars designed to carry scrap metal but they were empty, Doolittle said.
North Charleston police said roads near the incident were closed to traffic.
Crews from CSX were on their way to the site to get the cars back on the tracks, Doolittle said. That was expected to be accomplished early this afternoon.
The cause of the derailment was being investigated and had not yet been determined, the CSX spokesman said.
