Former Walterboro officer accused of stealing guns, money from evidence

State Law Enforcement Division agents on Thursday arrested a former Walterboro police officer accused of stealing guns and more than $10,000 from the department’s evidence room.

Stephanie Grant Bridge, 45, faces one count of misconduct in office, SLED spokesman Thom Berry said. The misdemeanor charge carries a penalty of up to one year in prison and a fine up to $1,000.

The alleged theft occurred between January 2010 and November, according to an arrest affidavit.

Bridge was employed as an evidence custodian at the Walterboro Public Safety Department. She used her position “to gain access to and remove from the evidence locker items of evidence which she converted to her personal gain,” the affidavit said.

SLED agents conducted an inventory of the locker room and discovered three handguns missing along with $10,974. Walterboro’s Police Chief Wade Marvin requested the investigation, according to the affidavit.

Bridge was booked Thursday at the Colleton County jail. The case will be prosecuted by the 14th Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
